"I just kind of fully embrace Chekov. I just think it's a wonderful
character, I think. ... There's no point to losing the potential that's
within Chekov just by making him a Russian kid. You know, Chekov is ...
a Cold War stereotype meets Davy Jones, you know? It's that thing,
and you have to take as much from it as you can and that sort of
energy he has and perhaps the comic relief that he has. It was
something I think he would fully embrace."

"...this movie is about a return to your favourite
characters but with new stuff too. You'll see the classic
Chekov -- I just brought something of myself to it as well."

In 2006, Paramount Pictures announced that the Star Trek franchise would be
returning to its roots: that a bold new feature film would be going back to the
characters of the Original Series.

J.J. Abrams and Bod Robot Productions took on
the monumental task.

Immediately, the rumors flew.... they would be going
back to the beginning, showing how Kirk and Spock
met. In the Academy, when Kirk first takes command,
on their first mission together...  no one was sure of the method this movie would
employ to show the meeting, but one thing was certain.

Fans of Pavel A. Chekov were worried.

Everyone knew that he was the youngest of the bridge crew,
and that-even if he joined the crew of the lower decks in the
first season of TOS- he certainly wasn't around when Kirk
                          and Spock first met.

Then, to the surprise of all... the second actor cast for the
                           movie was announced...

Anton Yelchin would be portraying Pavel Chekov in Star Trek XI.

Through the months that followed J. J. Abrams let fans know that he would be
honoring the original series with his own take on it... going back to the beginning
and starting the story all over again. His vision is bold, it's dramatic, and it's
courageous. We thank J.J. for taking the chance and infusing our favorite crew
and ship with new life...and for ensuring that they will continue to live on for new
generations for years to come.

And we welcome Anton Yelchin into the fold of Chekov fandom!
